The Truth Exposed

Increased longevity in humanities lifespan is largely credited to advances in medical research. While there are great achievements in the biomedical field, the industry is laced with collective ethical flaw due to large amounts of profit obtained within the industry. The functioning of biomedicine economically results in tainted research because of conflicting interest with pharmaceutical companies. The practice of biomedicine in itself has the ambition to discover cures and help society advance, however the setback are too large.  Funding driving much of the research and education in the biomedical field contaminates it completely. The importance of educating society on financial funding’s in the biomedical industry is key to creating a healthier society and improving the United States health care system.

Biomedicine is constantly in search of solutions and improvements, yet, biomedicine’s monotheism approach sets it at a disadvantage. Biomedicine’s learned function of producing large sums of money by treating diseases with pharmaceutical means aids in its monotheistic approach.  Some weaknesses of biomedicine include the “Band-Aid” effect, where drugs are used to cover the illness instead of diagnose and prevent. Often times medications tend to treat the disease and not the patient. There is a depersonalization with client and provider. Biomedicine is too political with institutional power and is weak in treating chronic pain. Not every person is the same, and often times drugs have harsh side effects. Since there is less money to be made with treating patients through preventive means, there is less research on holistic approaches!

Due to the bias behind biomedical research, portions of information the public receives is inaccurate. The biomedical field displays objectives in the viewpoint of the financer. There are a variety of holistic treatments that have the potential to be just as effective, the key difference between traditional and alternative medicine is that most forms of alternative medicine encompass whole-body care (Calabro, Everyday Health). An individual’s autonomy is affected by emotions, by ignoring emotions, it affects an individual’s ability to heal, and therefore a holistic approach is crucial. There are multiple books written on the power of positive thinking and the positive effect it has on the human body, along with the relation to stress and the toll it takes. Holistic approaches are often times more affordable and they treat the patient not the disease. Another pro to alternative approaches is the focus on prevention. Alternative medicine treats the underlying cause, not just the symptom (Life Saving Natural Cures).

The practice of biomedicine deserves credit for its many accomplishments in how far it has come within the past few centuries; however, it is important for society to be aware of the bias funding driving much of the research and education in the biomedical field. The biomedical field has the power of life and death; there is no subject more imperative than the life of a person.  Real world applications such as integrations of holistic approaches to medicine, and lower cost for health care will have a positive affect on the general population. A pure pursuit of truth would exist if alternative approaches were added into the mix. Education on the truths behind the biomedical field will greatly benefit society, giving people the power to justly choose for themselves, breaking the link between pharmaceutical profit and funded research.

Benefits of Naturopathic Medicine

  • The healing power of nature:The body has an inherent ability to maintain and restore health. Naturopathic physicians facilitate this healing process by removing obstacles to cure and identifying treatments to enhance healing.
  • Identify and treat the cause:Naturopathic physicians treat the underlying causes of illness rather than just the symptoms of disease. Symptoms are an external manifestation of an internal imbalance due to any combination of physical, mental, or  emotional Symptom management may be important, but it is more important not to disregard the underlying cause of disease.
  • First do no harm:A naturopathic treatment plan uses therapies that are gentle, non-invasive, effective, and do not have adverse side effects. A conscious effort is made to use methods that do not suppress symptoms.
  • Treat the whole person:Naturopathic physicians identify specific weaknesses or dysfunctions in their patients and tailor treatment based upon the patient’s individual presentation. It is the patient that is in need of treatment, not the disease state or symptom. Naturopathic physicians are interested in finding and treating characteristic symptoms that define the patient rather than common symptoms that define the disease. William Osler, MD, once said, “It is more important to know what sort of patient has a disease rather than what sort of disease a patient has.”
  • Prevention:It is far easier and cheaper to prevent a disease than to treat a disease. Naturopathic physicians evaluate both subjective and objective information necessary to uncover potential susceptibilities to future disease states in their patients. They can discuss specific lifestyle strategies or nutritional supplementation as a means for disease prevention.

Recently many have tried to rid their bodies of harmful bacteria and diseases by using holistic or alternative medicine. The truth is that there is a reason its called alternative medicine— its just not really medicine. Holistic approaches may have some benefits bringing back vitamin and mineral levels in the body, but how far can they really go? Can they kill viruses? Save someone from HIV? Or cure cancer? The answer is no. medicine does not become medicine, until it is actually proven to cause beneficial changes in the body. The reason most drug companies are trying to make such a large profit is because of the huge amount they have to spend to get their drugs tested and approved. Although many may prefer alternatives to medicine, at one point or another, they may need the real thing.
